Emergencies and disaster situations come in many forms. Numerous natural hazards may affect our lives here in central Alabama such as; tornadoes, floods and hurricanes that can cause devastating impacts on our lives. Technological hazards such as hazardous materials incidents can have very harmful effects as well. We always need to be “Ready” for human-caused incidents or emergency situations such as a fire in our home.
Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany these emergency or disaster situations. Individuals, families, and businesses should know what to do in the event of an emergency situation. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare makes any crisis more manageable for an individual, family or business.
Please start preparing today by taking these simple steps!
Get a Kit – Assemble a collection of first aid supplies, food, water, medicines and important papers that can sustain you and your family until the emergency passes.
Make a Plan – Develop a Family Communications Plan, a Plan to Shelter-in-place and a Plan to Evacuate. You and your family members may not be together when an emergency situation strikes. Planning ahead will improve your chances of keeping in touch, staying safe and quickly reuniting. Plans to stay inside and creating a barrier between yourself and potentially contaminated air outside, called sheltering-in-place may be necessary for certain situations, such as incidents involving hazardous materials. Also, create a plan for leaving or evacuating the area if the area is impacted by an emergency situation and leaving becomes necessary. Know your plans at work and school.
Be Informed – Learn what the hazards and threats are for your area and know where to find the best information for knowing how to respond to the circumstances and to be able to react quickly and in the best manner. Be prepared to adapt this information to your personal situation and make every effort to follow the instructions from authorities during emergency or disaster situations. Know where to go for the best information.
Get Involved – After preparing yourself and your family for potential emergencies, take the next step and get involved in preparing your community. There are many opportunities for volunteering with local volunteer, non-profit, or faith-based organizations that assist with preparing for assisting those in need during times of emergency or disaster situations. Find one now and get plugged in.
