At the end of June, the Elmore County Revenue Commissioner and County Engineer attended the Lower Coosa Discovery meeting at the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (EMA) office in Clanton. The meeting was jointly hosted by the Alabama EMA and Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Office of Water Resources. Representation from FEMA Region 4 was also present during the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to bring local government officials up to date on the RISK mapping process currently underway in the Lower Coosa River basin and to solicit any possible mitigation projects that a community may need to reduce the possibility of flooding. RISK mapping is the current process for evaluating an areas likelihood of flooding and is the basis for the National Flood Insurance Program.
