On Thursday September 3rd, Governor Ivey announced Elmore County as one of the future prison sites in the Alabama Department of Corrections facility plan. This announcement comes after years of effort by the Elmore County Commission and our partners to highlight the resources available in county that support the Alabama Department of Corrections operations . The Commission appreciates every partner who serves and/ or supports the existing facilities in our area and stands ready to continue working with our local and state partners to assist the state in solving a longstanding issue.
The Elmore County Economic Development Authority (ECEDA) has led the multi-year effort to educate and advocate for state facilities to remain in areas of the county where there is acceptance for the correctional industry, infrastructure in place to support the correctional facilities, the workforce available to support the correctional operations and the business community to support the facility. ECEDA spearheaded a group consisting of local governments, utilities, and the business community in this educational advocacy effort. This announcement by Governor Ivey moves the County and our partners one step closer to that goal.
